Die Mitnahme von 900 Kalipatronen erfolgte ebenfalls wiederum nur aus Gewichtsgründen. Bedarf anderer Boote lag nicht vor. Eigenverbrauch 300 Stück. Auf Rückfahrt über Bord 200 Stück, zurück 400 Stück.

Fazit des Kommandanten:

Besatzung und Boot haben sich in Tropenfahrt gut bewährt. Gesundheitliche Beschwerden wesentlicher Art traten nicht auf. Gerät hat sich in seiner jetzigen Form und bei jetziger Bedienungsart vorzüglich bewährt, vor allem der Manila-Vorlauf am Schlauchende erleichtert das Eindrücken. Abgegeben wurde: 522 m³ Brennstoff, 13,64 m³ Motorenöl, 15.595 kg Proviant. Gebacken wurden insgesamt 1.800 Brote, davon 1.180 zur Abgabe.

U 459, unter Korvettenkapitän Georg von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff, lief am 20.04.1943 von Bordeaux aus. Nach einem Tag mußte das Boot, wegen defekter Entlüftung, wieder nach Bordeaux zurück. Nach der Reparatur und dem erneuten Auslaufen, versorgte U 459 22 U-Boote im mittlerer Nordatlantik. Auf dieser Unternehmung konnte das Boot 1 Flugzeug abschießen. (Armstrong Whitworth Whitley N der RAF Squadron 10 OTU). Nach 44 Tagen und zurückgelegten 4.106 sm über und 681 sm unter Wasser, lief U 459 am 03.06.1943 wieder in Bordeaux ein.

U 459, unter Korvettenkapitän Georg von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff, lief am 22.07.1943 von Bordeaux aus. Das Boot wurde, auf dem Ausmarsch in sein Operationsgebiet, in der Biscaya, von britischen Flugzeugen schwer beschädigt, selbst versenkt. Das Flugzeug, die Vickers Wellington Q der britischen RAF Squadron 172, wurde dabei abgeschossen.

U 459 wurde am 24.07.1943 in der Biscaya nordwestlich Kap Ortegal durch Wasserbomben der Wellington Q der britischen RAF Squadron 172, geflogen von W.H.T. Jennings, und der Wellington V der britischen RAF Squadron 547, geflogen von J. Whyte, schwer beschädigt. Das eine Flugzeug stürzte ab. Der linke Flügel riß das Achterdeck des U-Bootes auf, ein Motor des Flugzeuges zerstörte die Brücke und die Vierlingsflak. Eine Wasserbombe blieb auf dem Oberdeck liegen. Beim Überbordrollen explodierte diese Wasserbombe und beschädigte den Druckkörper schwer. Das Boot sank. Korvettenkapitän Georg von Wilamowitz-Moellendorf blieb an Bord und ging mit U 459 unter. Die Überlebenden wurden vom polnischen Zerstörer ORP ORKAN (G.90) aufgenommen.
